Hello! My name is Lucia and many of you probably haven’t seen me in the office. I volunteer at the dental office about once a week on Tuesday afternoons, and I am currently a sophomore undergraduate at UNC.
I started out as a patient of Dr. Ellis’ and Dr. Winokur’s practice in 2007 and loved the office immediately. Not long after, I became interested in pursuing dentistry as a career. Dr. Winokur offered for me to shadow him and Dr. Ellis at the practice, but as a 7th grader in middle school, I was nervous. However, my curiosity eventually got the better of me, and I came in during the week of spring break to spend a few mornings in the office.
I was in love from the start! I came home every day telling my mom stories of all the cool teeth I saw (I know. I was the weird one who got excited about drilling teeth). When I was that young, I knew nothing about teeth, let alone careers in dentistry, but I knew after a week of shadowing that I wanted to be a dentist.
Since the 7th grade, I have been looking forward to the day when I graduate from dental school and begin my career as a real dentist! But you have to walk before you run, so as an undergraduate in college, Dr. Ellis and Dr. Winokur have given me the opportunity to visit weekly and be able to spend a day in the life of a dentist. The hope is for me to go to dental school, but for now, I am thrilled to be enjoying my sophomore year at UNC and volunteering for the 3rd year at the practice.
